Well, the Super Bowl is over and (sadly) football is finished until August. However, this past season NFL season has once again re-confirmed my firm conviction that God is in fact a diehard Cleveland Brown’s fan like I am. “How could a chronically miserable squad like the Browns be God’s chosen team?” you might ask. Wouldn’t it make more sense that a championship team like the Steelers would be God’s team of choice? Consider the following Bible passages:
JOB 5:11 The lowly he [God] sets on high
MT 20:16a “So the last will be first.”
PS 123:4 We have endured much ridicule from the proud, much contempt from the arrogant.
EZ 21:26 The lowly will be exalted and the exalted will be brought low.
Doesn’t that perfectly describe the Browns – lowly, ridiculed & last? Yet, in the end, God will exalt them, set them on high, and put them in first place.
Now consider the fate of the proud, victorious Steelers. This is how the Bible describes their kind:
IS 13:11 I will put an end to the arrogance of the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless.
JAS 4:6 “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
2SA 22:28 You save the humble, but your eyes are on the haughty to bring them low.
MT 20:16b “…the first will be last.”
Ultimately, the proud & arrogant Steelers will be humbled and brought low. God will rip their championships from them and put them in last place permanently.
So Steelers fans ought to savor their fleeting victory as we all await the eternal exaltation of the lowly, ridiculed Browns – God’s chosen team!
I obviously write all this in jest (well, kind of), but Christians would do well to remember that even though we may feel like our lives are sometimes filled with nothing but failure & set backs, while many of the arrogant, ruthless & godless around us seem to be succeeding in everything they do – God will ultimately set things right. He has given us his promises. We just need to trust him.
